Why China Is Moving Away From Paper Gold – And Why Investors Should Pay Attention

For years, investors have used both physical bullion and paper gold products to gain exposure to precious metals. While each serves a different purpose, recent developments in China suggest the country's approach to precious metals investing is evolving.

Several of China's largest banks have announced they will discontinue certain retail paper gold and silver trading services, citing heightened market volatility and stronger risk management requirements. At the same time, China's central bank continues to increase its physical gold reserves.

Although these events are separate, together they raise an interesting question:

Major Chinese banks, including Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (ICBC) and Postal Savings Bank of China, are withdrawing intermediary services that allowed retail investors to trade certain precious metals products through the Shanghai Gold Exchange.

The banks have stated the decision is designed to reduce risk following increased volatility in gold and silver markets. Investors can still own physical bullion and access other approved investment products.

This is not a ban on gold investing. Instead, it reflects a move to reduce exposure to higher-risk retail trading products.

While retail trading products are being scaled back, China's central bank has continued adding to its official gold reserves.

According to the World Gold Council, the People's Bank of China has steadily accumulated gold as part of a broader strategy to diversify reserve assets and reduce reliance on foreign currencies.

China is not alone. Central banks around the world have been net buyers of gold in recent years, highlighting gold's ongoing role as a long-term reserve asset.

The developments highlight an important distinction between 

Paper gold allows investors to track movements in the gold price through financial products.

Physical bullion provides direct ownership of the metal itself.
