For many New Zealanders, the rising cost of living is impossible to ignore.

Everything from groceries and power to fuel and insurance costs more than it did just a few years ago. But inflation isn't only making everyday life more expensive — it's also reducing the value of the money we save.

Over the past five years, consumer prices in New Zealand have risen by around 23%.

Put another way, the purchasing power of money has fallen by around 19%.

$10,000 today has roughly the same buying power as $8,100 did five years ago.

Inflation Is Back in Focus in New Zealand

Annual inflation in New Zealand reached 4.1% in the June 2026 quarter, above the Reserve Bank's 1–3% target range.

Higher fuel prices linked to conflict in the Middle East were a major contributor, with the effects also flowing through to other areas of the economy.

In response, the Reserve Bank of New Zealand raised the Official Cash Rate by 0.25% to 2.75% in September.

New Zealand isn't alone. The US Federal Reserve has also raised interest rates by 0.25%, while geopolitical tensions, energy prices and inflation continue to create uncertainty across the global economy.
