The Precious Metal Nobody Is Talking About

Over the past year, gold has been making headlines with record prices, while silver has attracted renewed attention thanks to growing industrial demand and ongoing supply deficits.

But quietly in the background, another precious metal has been developing a very interesting story. Platinum.

Despite supportive fundamentals, platinum remains largely overlooked by mainstream investors and receives only a fraction of the attention currently directed toward gold and silver.

For some investors, that lack of attention is exactly what makes it worth watching.

The platinum market is expected to record its 

fourth consecutive annual supply deficit in 2026

, with global demand continuing to exceed newly mined supply. Above-ground inventories are also becoming increasingly tight, with industry forecasts suggesting inventories could fall to less than three months of global demand coverage by the end of the year. 

Unlike many commodities, platinum supply cannot be quickly increased.

Around 70% of global platinum production originates from South Africa, where the industry continues to face challenges including aging mines, power shortages, rising costs, and years of underinvestment. Bringing significant new supply online can take many years. 

One of the biggest misconceptions surrounding platinum is that demand is disappearing. 

In reality, platinum continues to play an important role across several industries.

Hybrid vehicles and internal combustion engines continue to require platinum for catalytic converters, while some manufacturers have increasingly substituted platinum for palladium in certain applications. 

Platinum also remains an important component in hydrogen fuel cells and other emerging technologies. While hydrogen demand remains a longer-term theme, many investors view it as an additional source of future demand rather than the primary investment case today. 

Why Hasn't Platinum Received More Attention?

This is perhaps the most interesting question.

Despite tightening fundamentals, platinum has largely remained in the shadow of gold and silver. Gold has become the preferred safe-haven asset amid geopolitical uncertainty.

Silver has captured investor attention through both monetary demand and its growing role in AI infrastructure, electronics and renewable energy.

Platinum, meanwhile, sits quietly between the two, part precious metal, part industrial metal and perhaps because it doesn't fit neatly into either category, it has simply been overlooked.

History has shown that markets attracting the least attention can sometimes become the most interesting stories later on. That does not guarantee future price performance, and platinum remains a more volatile and cyclical market than gold.

However, supply deficits, shrinking inventories and relatively limited investor participation have led many investors to view platinum as one of the more overlooked areas within the precious metals sector today. 

Gold remains the ultimate monetary metal. Silver continues to benefit from strong industrial and investment demand.

But platinum may quietly be developing one of the most interesting fundamental stories in the precious metals market. Sometimes the assets receiving the least attention today become the ones everyone is talking about tomorrow.
