When buying physical gold or silver, choosing between bars and coins can have a bigger impact than you might expect.

Two products can contain the same amount of precious metal but cost different amounts to buy — and give you very different options when it comes time to sell.

A larger bar will generally give you more metal for your money, while smaller bars and coins can make it easier to sell only part of your holding later.

So the question isn't simply: bars or coins?

It's whether you value a lower premium today or greater flexibility in the future — and where the right balance sits for you.

That decision becomes increasingly important as your bullion holding grows.

Gold and silver bullion bars fall into two categories: cast bars and minted bars.

Cast bars are made by pouring molten gold or silver into a mould, then stamping or pressing the required markings into the finished bar. This gives each bar a unique shape and finish, meaning no two cast bars are exactly the same. Their simpler production also helps keep premiums lower.

Minted bars are cut to a precise size and shape before being struck with detailed designs and markings. They have a clean, uniform finish and are often individually packaged, with some including serial numbers or additional security features. The extra manufacturing and presentation means minted bars can carry a higher premium than cast bars.

From an investment perspective, both cast and minted bars provide physical ownership of gold or silver based on their weight and purity. The main consideration is where the value of the purchase sits: cast bars can provide a more cost-effective way to acquire precious metal by weight, while minted bars combine the value of the metal with a more refined finish, design and presentation.

Why Choose Gold or Silver Coins and Rounds?

Gold and silver bullion are also available as coins and rounds. Although they can look very similar, there is an important difference between the two.

Bullion coins are issued by government mints and carry a legal-tender face value. Well-known examples include the Australian Kangaroo from The Perth Mint, the Canadian Maple Leaf from the Royal Canadian Mint and the South African Krugerrand.

Bullion rounds are produced by private mints and do not carry a legal-tender face value. They can still contain the same weight and purity of precious metal as a bullion coin and are available in a wide range of designs and series.

Coins and rounds are commonly available in 1oz sizes, as well as other weights. These smaller denominations make it possible to build a holding gradually while also providing greater flexibility when it comes time to sell.

For example, ten 1oz silver coins or rounds can be sold individually or in smaller amounts. The same 10oz of silver held in a single 10oz bar would need to be sold as one product.

The main consideration is the balance between cost and flexibility. Coins and rounds can carry higher premiums per ounce than larger bullion bars, but smaller individual denominations make it easier to buy over time and sell only part of a holding when required.

Are Coins and Minted Products Worth More When Selling?

A higher premium when purchasing a coin, round or minted bar does not automatically mean that the same premium will be recovered when it is sold.

At Best Bullion, our standard bullion buyback is based on the underlying precious metal content rather than the original retail premium.  So a 1oz gold bar and a 1oz gold coin containing the same amount of pure gold are assessed on the same underlying gold value.

This does not mean a particular product can never sell for more. Some bullion dealers, collectors or private buyers may be prepared to pay an additional premium for a particular mint, design, series or product when there is sufficient demand.

That additional value can change over time and is not guaranteed. For this reason, a higher purchase premium is best considered in terms of what the product offers at the time of purchase, rather than assuming that premium will be recovered when it is eventually sold.
